Argentine Tegu

Salvator merianae

The largest of the tegu family, this lizard can grow to 4ft+.  Juveniles will be mostly carnivores, eating animals such as invertebrates, fish, small rodents and snails.  However adult tegus have a much wider range of food including fruit, vegetables and greens.  Not a lot of animals predate on adults, their main threat, as is often the case is humans, being killed for their skin, bush meat and for the pet trade.  Females will often rip open termite mounds to lay their eggs in.  After the tegu has left, the termites will repair the damage done to the mound, leaving the precious eggs safe inside.
